New Delhi: Around 30 lakh houses have been constructed in 2019-20 fiscal so far by the government under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna-Urban (PMAY-U). This is the highest figure in any fiscal. A total of 26.18 lakh and 19.43 lakh houses were constructed in 2018-19 and 2017-18 financial years respectively.
About 1 crore homes have been sanctioned in the ongoing fiscal. Around 41.63 lakh and 80.33 lakh houses were sanctioned in 2017-18 and 2018-19 fiscals respectively, according to a statement by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The construction of 30 lakh houses under the PMAY-U has had a multiplier effect on some of the other sectors of the economy. About 1.20 crore jobs have been created and has benefitted around 250 industries such as bricks, steel, cement, paint, hardware, sanitary and many more.
About 568 lakh metric tonne of cement will be needed to complete the sanctioned houses. Around 178 lakh metric tonne of cement has already been used in the construction activity. About 130 lakh metric tonne of steel will be needed for the sanctioned homes. About 40 lakh metric tonne of steel has already been used.
