Delhi may soon have Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric buses and cars

New Delhi: Delhi may soon have Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric buses and cars. State-run NTPC has invited international Expression of Interest (EoI) for such buses and cars that will be run in Delhi and Leh.

This will be the first experiment in the country with Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric buses and cars. An overall solution will be developed from green energy to the fuel cell vehicle technology. The efforts, if successful, will go a long in solving the pollution related problems of Delhi and other parts of the country, the governemtn said in a statement.

The Expression of Interest has been invited by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC.

It will be a pilot project in which renewable energy will be harnessed for the generation of hydrogen and also develop it’s storage. There will also be solutions found for dispensation of hydrogen.

The hydrogen fuel cell technology is only with certain countries and its usage is perceived to be quite helpful in dealing with reduction of carbon emissions while driving vehicles with petrol or diesel. These are considered to be even better than electric vehicles where there is some amount of carbon emissions since mast of the electricity is generated by burning coal.

NVVN will invite tenders for more hydrogen fuel cell based vehicles once the initial project is successful. The pilot will test whole lot of things apart from just running the buses and cars of this fuel type.
