Government Fast-Tracks Coal Evacuation Infrastructure to Propel India Towards Viksit Bharat 2047

In a decisive move to enhance India’s coal sector and support the nation’s energy security, the union government has accelerated the development of critical coal evacuation infrastructure. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Coal, is a vital component of the broader strategy to position India as a global leader in sustainable coal production and logistics, aligning with the ambitious vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

A robust coal evacuation network is crucial for ensuring a reliable supply of coal to meet the growing demands of India’s power plants and industries. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Coal has launched a comprehensive plan focused on the rapid development of key logistics projects. This initiative is closely aligned with the PM Gati Shakti vision of “Integrated planning and synchronized time-bound implementation,” which is central to realizing the government’s vision for a prosperous and developed India by 2047.

As part of this strategic plan, the Ministry has identified 38 priority rail projects under the coal logistics plan. These projects, which are being fast-tracked in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, aim to improve rail connectivity, ensure timely coal supply, and reduce logistics costs across the country. The enhancement of these rail networks is expected to significantly boost the efficiency of coal transportation, thereby supporting the nation’s energy needs.

Among the 38 priority projects, two significant rail projects in Odisha have recently received government approval: the Sardega-Bhalumuda double line and the Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road single line.

The 37.24 km Sardega-Bhalumuda new double line is strategically important as it passes through key coal blocks in the IB Valley and Mand-Raigarh Coalfield. This project will facilitate the evacuation of coal from mines operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and several private entities. By reducing the transportation distance to power plants in Northern India, this project will enhance operational efficiency and support the broader goal of energy security.

Similarly, the 138.32 km Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road new single line will significantly improve coal evacuation from the Talcher Coalfield. This line provides a direct and shorter route towards Nagpur and the western regions, reducing logistics costs and improving the overall efficiency of coal transportation from the Talcher region.

The Ministry of Coal, under the leadership of the Coal Minister, remains committed to fast-tracking these critical projects. This dedication ensures that India’s coal sector not only meets the current energy demands but also lays the groundwork for a sustainable and developed nation by 2047.

“The rapid development of these coal evacuation projects is a testament to our commitment to building a robust and efficient coal logistics network,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Coal. “These efforts are crucial for supporting India’s energy needs and contributing to our long-term vision of a Viksit Bharat.”

As the government pushes forward with these strategic initiatives, the coal sector is expected to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, ensuring energy security and fostering economic growth.
