Gujarat Government Advances Solar Initiatives with Rs 177 Crore Investment in Rooftop Solar Systems

New Delhi, September 10, 2024: The Gujarat government has committed Rs 177 crore to install 48 MW of solar rooftop systems across government buildings during the 2023-24 financial year, according to a statement by the government early this week. This effort is part of the state’s broader initiative to harness renewable energy and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. The state’s Climate Change Department is leading the effort, aiming to maximize Gujarat’s solar potential by leveraging government infrastructure for clean energy generation.

Gujarat’s hot and dry climate, characterized by long summers and high levels of solar radiation, makes it an ideal location for harnessing solar energy. The state’s average annual sunshine duration is high, especially in arid regions like Kutch and Saurashtra, where cloud cover is minimal. This abundance of strong, direct sunlight allows for efficient solar energy generation, both through large solar parks like the Charanka Solar Park and rooftop solar installations.

By March 2024, the state has set up a total of 3,023 solar rooftop systems, generating a combined capacity of 56.8 MW across various government departments. The latest allocation of Rs 177.4 crore reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to expanding solar energy deployment on public buildings.

Strong Renewable Energy Performance in Gujarat

In the 2023-24 financial year, Gujarat has demonstrated significant progress in renewable energy generation, producing 24,765.3 million units (MU) of renewable energy. Of this, solar energy contributed 9,637 MU, while wind energy accounted for 14,201 MU. Other sources, including hydro, small hydro, biomass, and bagasse, contributed smaller portions to the overall renewable energy output.

Gujarat has consistently tapped into its vast solar energy potential. Key projects such as the Charanka Solar Park have solidified its role as a major player in the country’s solar energy generation. Additionally, the state has promoted rooftop solar systems for residential use, further enhancing its energy mix.

In addition to solar power, Gujarat has made significant strides in wind energy, particularly through coastal wind farms. These projects have contributed substantially to the state’s renewable energy capacity, complementing its solar initiatives and enhancing its overall energy security.

Gujarat’s emphasis on solar and wind energy, supported by significant government investment, highlights its leadership in India’s renewable energy landscape. The installation of 48 MW of solar rooftop systems on government buildings not only advances the state’s clean energy goals but also underscores its broader efforts to capitalize on solar and wind resources for sustainable development.

The state will host the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet & Expo (RE-INVEST 2024) from September 16 to 18 in Gandhinagar.
