Otis India Set to Double Escalator Production in Bengaluru as Infrastructure Demand Rises

MUMBAI, August 28, 2024: Otis India, a subsidiary of global elevator and escalator giant Otis Worldwide Corporation (NYSE: OTIS), has announced a major expansion of its Bengaluru manufacturing facility, a move that underscores the company’s commitment to supporting India’s rapid urbanization. This expansion will double the facility’s escalator production capacity and increase overall manufacturing capabilities by 20%, allowing Otis India to better meet the growing demand for mobility solutions across the country’s residential, commercial, and infrastructure sectors.

The expansion comes at a time when India is experiencing an unprecedented boom in infrastructure development, driven by urbanization and the need for modern mobility solutions. Otis India’s Bengaluru facility, established in 1996, has long been at the forefront of this growth, supplying elevators and escalators to support key infrastructure projects. With the expanded capacity, the company is now even better positioned to service India’s growing cities.

“Otis has been a partner in India’s growth since 1892, and this investment will further strengthen our commitment and momentum in this critical market,” said Judy Marks, Otis Chair, CEO, and President, at the ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion. She emphasized that the expanded facility will allow Otis India to better serve both domestic and export markets with innovative mobility solutions tailored to the needs of modern urban centers. “The expansion will help us better serve our customers in India and export markets with innovative mobility solutions that support the rapid pace of urbanization,” she added.

As India continues to urbanize, the need for efficient transportation within buildings and public spaces has skyrocketed. Otis India’s expansion not only supports this growth but also plays a vital role in key infrastructure projects. Bengaluru’s manufacturing facility, for instance, is helping to power the city’s expanding metro system by delivering 112 Gen2® elevators for the second phase of the Bengaluru Metro project. Additionally, it has supplied 255 units to the Bhopal and Indore metro projects. These projects are pivotal to the mobility infrastructure that is shaping the future of India’s cities.

“Our Bengaluru facility is a key contributor to India’s mobility infrastructure,” said Sebi Joseph, President of Otis India. “This expansion will allow us to double our current escalator production capacity, supporting the growing needs of India’s vital infrastructure. We’re helping to build modern metro systems and are also taking steps to harness digitalization for smarter, more efficient manufacturing.”

Sustainability is another central theme of Otis India’s operations. The Bengaluru facility holds an Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Gold certification, reflecting Otis’s commitment to green building practices. The company’s dedication to sustainability is a driving force behind this expansion, ensuring that the facility can meet growing demand while adhering to environmentally responsible standards. The previous expansion of the facility in 2012 doubled its capacity, and this latest expansion further aligns with Otis’s vision of sustainable growth.

The Lead Design Centre at Otis India’s Bengaluru facility has also been a hub for innovation, having developed over 25 products for both the Indian and export markets. These innovations play a critical role in supporting the company’s growth in India, as well as its global operations. The expanded facility will allow Otis India to continue pushing the boundaries of product development, offering cutting-edge mobility solutions to a growing number of cities.

In addition to increasing production, the expansion will also incorporate advanced digitalization strategies to optimize operations. By integrating smart manufacturing processes, Otis India aims to improve efficiency across transportation, logistics, and other areas of production. “Digitalization will help us meet our customers’ needs by innovating and improving productivity in transportation, logistics, and manufacturing,” said Joseph, emphasizing the company’s forward-looking approach.

This expansion is not just about increasing output—it represents Otis India’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and supporting India’s urban transformation. By investing in new technologies and expanding its manufacturing capabilities, Otis is positioning itself as a leader in the mobility sector, driving growth and progress for the country’s rapidly developing cities.
